The Association officers have decided to add to our McKinney Library with books that can be loaned to the membership. An updated list of books available is given elsewhere in the quarterly. Our aim is to be able to furnish books not available in many libraries, books of general and specific interest to our research needs. Please take advantage of our loan program, it is cost-free. We ask only that you reimburse the association for the cost of shipping and the mailing container (jiffy bags are available at most Post Offices at a minimal charge).
This issue of the quarterly will complete our third year and I think that we have all earned a 'pat on the back' for the manuscripts and information that members have contributed to each issue. We will complete the NC, SC and related materials, along with some submitted materials concerning other areas, as well as adding to the chronology of NJ material. All manuscripts are appreciated in our quest for McKinney information, but may we please suggest that photocopies of the original material are always appreciated. We strive for accuracy in the information presented.
Our apologies are given for the ten-generation chart included in the last issue. I managed to type only nine generations on the form. When these are expended, the form will be re-issued, with all ten generations on it.

History of Ritchie Co., WVA, (Minnie Kendall Lowther, 1911) The McKinneys were dispossessed by William Mckinney (the Nutters) who purchased a tract of three thousand, nine hundred, twenty acres in this section in the vicinity of Cairo, of Mathias Mattenly, for the small sum of $8040. Afterwards, he bought another tract of 1080 acres and after giving each one of his children a large farm, he sold the remainder to a colony of Scottish settlers who came later.
Mr. McKinney came from the Keystone State with his wife and large family of children, and founded his home where his late grandson, Jacob McKinney, resided until his death. He figured prominently in the early history of the county both in church and state affairs, and for a number of years after his coming, this was now known as McKinney settlement, the former name Egypt, being gradually dropped. He was born of English parentage in Lycoming Co., Eastern PA, 4 Sep 1760, the son of William and Hannah McKinney and was next

William McKinney Among the substantial families who early settled in the beautiful valley in the vicinity of Broadway, in the township of Franklin, was that of McKinney. The progenitor of this family here was William McKinney who was born in Ireland on August 20, 1723, and who while a young man emigrated to America and settled on some five hundred acres of land about half way between the villages of Broadway and New Village. Little more is known of this sturdy pioneer than that he found his new home a wild tract of uncultivated land and resided upon it during the remainder of his life. He died on Oct 24, 1777, just at the beginning of the war for independence in this country. His first wife, Hannah, was born Sep 9, 1730 and died Mar 18, 1765.
Note: This is taken from the History of Warren Co., NJ, and it will be noted that in another citation of William McKinney of Ritchie Co., WVA in this issue, it states that he, William Jr. was born in Lycoming Co., PA, not NJ, and that he was of English parentage . . which proves that nothing in print is absolute.
Of their children, John was father of our subject and succeeded to the homestead. He was born Sep 11, 1757, married Mar 29, 1786, Eleanor Davison, who was born Mar 24, 1761 and died Jun 8, 1843. He died Feb 8, 1838. His life was spent on this farm, on which he erected a stone house and stone barns, the latter of which are standing and in good repair in 1880, having been built in 1805. Besides carrying on his farm, he built a distillery, which was carried on by his son for some time after his death. His children were Hannah, b Sep 1787, died Oct 5, 1797, William, Mary, died Nov 2, 1812, Jemima Taylor, born Dec 15, 1794, died Sep 24, 1797, Eleanor Stinson, b Feb 26, 1792, died Oct 4, 1797, Sarah Davison b Mar 24, 1797, d Sep 24 1819, and William born Oct 15, 1801. It will be readily seen by the above dates that nearly this whole family of children were swept away by death in early life. John McKinney reached his majority just as the colonies began to free themselves from the

Yoke of the mother country, and patriotic to the land of his birth, he served as a soldier in the American Army.
William, youngest of these children, was born and has lived on the old homestead during his life, and now nearly fourscore years of age, he can look back through the decades and mark the advancement in every department of industry, and contrast the labor saving machines with the hand work of a half century ago, when he was in the prime of manhood. His life has been spent as a farmer on the land first settled by his grandfather, near the middle of the 18th century, and during his long and useful career, he has been known as a man of sound judgment, unassuming in his ways, honest in his dealings, and Christian and moral in his character.
Mr. McKinney married in 1824, Mary daughter of Henry Winters, a man well known in Warren Co as sheriff, and whose son, William Winters was clerk of the county at the time of his death. She was born in 1804 and died August 15, 1879. Both Mr. and Mrs. McKinney were formerly members of the Greenwich Presbyterian Church, but upon the organization of the church at Stewartsville, were among its founders, and have continued their relations with that body of Christians. Mr. McKinney has officiated as one of the trustees of the church for many years. He has been an unswerving member of the Democratic Party since he reached his majority, but no seeker after place, although he has not shrunk from the duties of a citizen, having held some minor offices in his township. Soon after his marriage, about 1835, he built a new stone house on his place, in which he resides in 1880. His children are John, who married 1849 Mary, dau of Archibald Davison, and since 1865 has resided in the stone house erected by his father, and is the possessor of a part of the original homestead, Ellen, wife of Abraham Stewart, a justice of the peace at Washington, New Jersey Catharine, wife of Peter Fritts, a farmer at Andover Sarah Elizabeth deceased, who was the wife of James Richey, deceased, leaving three children George W., Lizzie and James Franklin Henry deceased James Hannah, wife of John T. Oberly, a farmer in Franklin township and Belinda, wife of James M. Hoffman, a grain merchant and miller at Asbury.

An interesting item was taken from the CA Central Coast Genealogy Society in 1984, describing requesting genealogical materials from the Russian Embassy or Consul. The received material was a packet of booklets with no relationship to genealogy strictly political in nature. It is understood that receiving material of this type can be construed as questionable.

Durand Family Genealogy
Hard Cover, approximately 175pp with some illustrations. This is an excellent genealogy by Maude Mercer Sellman, however the printer neglected to include several pages in the binding such as the forward, title page and notes from the author. Mrs. Sellman has offered these books to the McKinney Association as a donation. We shall be happy to furnish them to interested members at a cost of $15.00 price of publishing alone. They will be sent postpaid. Names included in this genealogy are McNaught, Mercer, Clearwater, McKinney, Durand (of course), and associated families. Beginning with John Durand of Connecticut and wife, Patience Weed, it traces the Durand family over most of the contiguous United States to the present day.
Scots Ancestry Service, in Edinburgh, has informed us that they will not be able to help us, or anyone for that matter, without the exact place of birth in Scotland, and the date of birth. Since we do not, in essence, have any vital statistics on Mordecai McKinney, they cannot be of service in our search. I have written a professional searcher regarding Scottish research (Sep 1984) but have not yet had a reply from her not an auspicious sign.

A member asked about Halsey's Mills location. I believe that they are the mills described in a volume called ÒDiaries of George Riley Hazard of Broome County, New York and Susquehannah County, PA 1854-1867'. The volume does have Blachleys and McKinneys mentioned in it, however, I have not been able to locate a copy. I believe the author was Dee Merritt in Concord, CA. Does anyone have access to this book?
